What button do you press to get quick slots on Skyrim? Q on PC, D-pad Up/Down on Xbox 360, and D-pad Up on PS3.

Character slots in all the TES games (I'm saying this based on from Morrowind up) were basically save slots. Auto saves will overwrite autosaves no matter what is going on.
